What makes it interesting?
The Fork-tailed Drongo has built an entire survival strategy around deception. It mimics the alarm calls of other species and even meerkats to trick them into believing a predator is nearby. The moment they panic and abandon their food to flee, the Drongo swoops in and steals the meal for itself. It doesn’t rely on just one trick either; it keeps a repertoire of dozens of different fake alarm calls, switching between them so its victims don’t catch on to the pattern.

Research has recorded Drongos using up to 32 different mimicked alarm calls, making it one of the most sophisticated vocal deceivers in the animal kingdom.
